Is the International Driving Permit recognized in Vietnam?

Certainly, Vietnam's road traffic authorities acknowledge the International Driver's Permit (IDP) as a document that translates your valid home country driver’s license into 12 widely spoken languages. Also referred to as an international driver’s license, it was approved by the United Nations during the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and is recognized globally as a means to translate the driver’s license of every tourist.

If you plan to drive in locations like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or explore the country with a motorbike or other vehicles from local car rental agencies, obtaining an IDP is highly recommended. Vietnam welcomes foreign drivers with licenses from countries such as Australia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and more.

To apply for an IDP, simply click the blue "Apply for IDP" button on this page, fill out the application form, and follow the provided instructions.

Do you need a license to drive in Vietnam?

Yes, you do. Your International Driving License or Permit is considered invalid if not accompanied by your valid home country driver’s license. For expats planning to drive in the country for more than three months, it's advisable to obtain a Vietnamese driver’s license, which has a base price of VND 135,000 or 5.54 USD.

Vietnam, with its timeless charm and diverse landscapes, offers numerous attractions, making it an ideal destination for both locals and foreigners. From the northern region with its remote beauty in Ha Giang to the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City, each area has its unique cultural, historical, and natural wonders.

If you're traveling to the north, Ha Giang, located almost 300 km from Hanoi, offers a journey back in time with its remote towns and villages. Ha Long Bay, with its spectacular scenery and traditional floating villages, is a must-visit in the northern region.

Heading to Central Vietnam, Dalat is known for its cool climate and countryside charm, while Hoi An's Ancient Town takes you on a captivating journey to ancient times.

Southern Vietnam, with its bustling city of Ho Chi Minh, offers attractions like the Mekong Delta with its river of nine dragons and the picturesque Phu Quoc with its pristine beaches and clear waters.

Driving in Vietnam comes with important rules to ensure safety. Prohibitions include drunk driving, use of earphones and phones while driving, and horns during the night. Observing right-hand driving, using safety belts, adhering to speed limits, and respecting traffic signals are essential for a smooth and safe driving experience. Always be aware of local customs and road conditions for an enjoyable journey.
